The department of Musicology at Palacký University Olomouc, the second oldest university in the Czech lands (founded in 1573), was established in 1946. At the present time the department is an institution which offers bachelor, master and doctoral programmes in the areas of theory and the history of music, and at the same time it is a scientific research centre. The foremost areas of interest of the music department in Olomouc are 19^th and 20^th century music, focused on leading figures of Czech music (Zdeněk Fibich, Leoš Janáček, Vítězslav Novák, Josef Suk etc.), and music theatre. Another specialism is to baroque music in the Czech lands (compositions by Pavel Josef Vejvanovský, Adam Michna from Otradovice, Italian opera in Bohemia and Moravia, music at the court of the Olomouc archbishops, etc). Particular attention is given to research in organology and ethnoorganology, music editing and music regionalism. The current task of the department is to establish a study programme, in the Anglo-American world known as “Popular Music Studies”.

Role of the partner: Creation of database of sources and bibliography to the history of music theatre in Moravia (1870-1920); collection of theatre posters for the opera, operetta productions of the municipal theatre in Olomouc and Opava; participation in a workshop of the project partners in Budapest, presentation of the latest outcomes of the project, and authorial share in publishing of a brochure from the workshop.

Previous cooperation with project partner: From 2009 to 2011, the partner was the principal investigator of the Czech Science Foundation project German opera Scene in Olomouc.
