„General Bumbum.” A Borsszem Jankó Ábrányi-portréja

Id. Ábrányi Kornél működésének, gyakran pátosszal teli arcélének erős kritikájú, politikai felhangtól sem mentes ellenpontja a korabeli élclapok írásainak sora. Megjelenítésének e verbális és vizuális módja egyaránt tanulságos, különösen a Borsszem Jankó 1872-ben közölt General Bumbum-karikatúrája tükrében. A kapcsolódó kísérőszöveg az életmű szerteágazó irányait bontja ki – az ikonográfia és az irónia eszköztárával. Előadásomban a címadó elnevezés 19. századi használatából kiindulva mutatom be az Ábrányit jellemző élclapok képi és szóbeli fordulatainak típusait.
“General Boom-Boom” – Ábrányi’s Portrait in the Satiric Paper Borsszem Jankó
The profile of the passionate activities carried out by Kornél Ábrányi the Elder also generated a contrasting image – in a number of articles released by the satiric newspapers of the period. These articles equally employed strongly criticism and implied political overtones. The specific verbal and visualmodalities of presentation are both instructive, especially in light of Borsszem Jankó’s [Jack and the Bean-Stalk] caricature of “General Boom- Boom,” published in 1872. The accompanying text related to the caricature reveals the diverse fields of Ábrányi’s activity and lifework – by using the tools of iconography and irony. This paper presents the typology of the visual and verbal idioms meant to characterize Ábrányi, starting from the nineteenth-century use of the designation raised in the title.
