Ahogy a Szatmár-Németi Dalegyesület Ábrányi Kornél 1889. évi tiszteletbeli taggá válása során megfogalmazott méltatásában tömören és lényegre törően összefoglalta: „A hála érzelmét igyekszik leroni evvel az egyesület azon érdemekben gazdag férfiú iránt, ki mint az országos dalárszövetségnek 25 éven át volt buzgó titkára a dalművészet felvirágoztatására szentelte napjait.” Ábrányi Kornél, a hazai dalármozgalom egyik kulcsfigurája kezdetektől fogva szívvel-lélekkel támogatta az amatőr kórusmozgalmat. Maga is úgy jellemzi ebbéli tevékenységét, mint amely élete és munkaereje javát vette igénybe. Szerepe többrétű volt: mint a Zenészeti Lapok főszerkesztője a folyóiratban közölt (részben általa megfogalmazott) híreken és írásokon keresztül irányítani tudta a mozgalmat, s ezzel megteremthette a tetszése szerinti narratívát. Emellett az 1868-ban hivatalosan is megalakult Országos Magyar Daláregyesület titkáraként éveken keresztül annak vezéralakja volt. Komponistaként pedig hozzájárult a magyar férfikari irodalom megteremtéséhez, mely e mozgalom egyik legjelentősebb – még ha minőségében vitatott is – hozzájárulása volt a magyar zenei élethez.
“It Demanded On the Best of My Life and Petty Work Capacities” – The Relationship Between Kornél Ábrányi Sr. and the Choral Movement in Hungary
As the Choral Society of Szatmár-Németi (now: Satu Mare, Romania) summed it up in their appreciation of Kornél Ábrányi, formulated in a succinct and straightforward manner on the occasion of his becoming an HonoraryMember of in 1889: “Thus, the association seeks to express gratitude to the man rich in merits who, as the zealous secretary of the National Choral Association for 25 years, dedicated his days to the flourishing of the art of choral singing”. Key figure of Hungarian choral movement Kornél Ábrányi wholeheartedly supported the amateur choir movement from the very beginning. He described his own activity in this domain as having demanded the bulk of his life and labour capacities. His role was multifaceted: as the Editor-in-Chief of the musical journal Zenészeti Lapok, he was able to control the movement through the articles and news updates published there (also, he wrote a significant part of these texts) thus, hewas able to create the master narrative he preferred. In addition, as the Secretary of the Hungarian National Choral Society, officially established in 1868, he was a leading figure of the organization for many years. As a composer, he took part in the creation of theHungarian literature for 7 men’s choirs, which became, despite its controversial quality, one of the most significant contributions of the choral movement to Hungarian musical life as a whole.
