„Voltak idők, mikor tollával mozgalmakat teremtett, mikor kritikai működése palládiuma volt a magyar muzsikának. Ma már másképp van” – írta a Budapesti Hírlap tudósítója 1897-ben Ábrányi működésének ötvenedik jubileumi ünnepsége alkalmából. Utóbbi esemény, hat évvel későbbi halála és 1922-ben születésének centenáriuma lehetőséget teremtenek arra, hogy megvizsgáljuk hogyan alakult a magyar zeneéletet közel fél évszázadon át meghatározó zenei író, zeneszerző és zenepedagógus emlékezete a 20. század elején, hogyan őrizte meg emlékét az utókor. A magyar művészet apostola és csíráztatója? Halhatatlan zeneszerző? Ábrányi Kornélra emlékezve előadásomban a hazai szerepének és jelentőségének alakulását tekintem át, amely korunk Ábrányi-képét is meghatározza.
“The Steadfast Apostle of Hungarian Art” – The Memory of Kornél Ábrányi at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century
“There were times when he created movements with his pen, when his critical work was the palladium of Hungarian music. Today it is different,” wrote the correspondent of the daily Budapesti Hírlap in 1897, on the fiftieth jubilee celebration of Ábrányi’s career. This latter event, his death six years later, and the centenary of his birth (1922) provide us an opportunity to examine how the remembrance of the music writer, composer, and music teacher defining Hungarian musical life for almost half a century looked like at the beginning of the 20th century, and how posterity preserved his memory. Apostle and germinator of Hungarian art? Immortal composer? Remembering Kornél Ábrányi, this paper surveys the evolution of his role and significance in Hungary, which also determine our period’s image of Ábrányi.
