Béla Vikár deserves credit for finding the tool that made modern and objective dokumentation possible in folk music collection: the phonograph. However, as he lacked music education, he could not carry out collections relying on ethnomusicological research criteria. At the turn of the 19th  and 20th centuries no such discipline existed. We owe its formation and its significan early results to Zoltán Kodály and Béla Bartók. The purpose of the exhibition is to outline their work in this field, including their cooperation, the first results, their Hungarian and interethnic research, and their mentaly concerning folk music.
