The 200-year-old Hungarian Academy of Sciences has played a decisive role in shaping Hungarian musicology from the very beginning. It has encouraged folk music research, the exploration of older and newer sources of Hungarian music history, and the analytical study of the works of the greatest composers whether Hungarians or active in Hungary, including Joseph Haydn, Franz Liszt, Ferenc Erkel, Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály, György Ligeti and György Kurtág. The original documents, memorabilia and publications on display come primarily from the significant collections of the Institute for Musicology (the Bartók Archives, the Folk Music and Folk Dance Archives, the Archives for 20th–21st Century Hungarian Music, the Department of Early Music, the Department of Hungarian Music History, and the Library of Musicology), and showcase the diverse directions of Hungarian researches into musicology, its leading figures and institutions. The exhibition was organized by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ Section of Linguistics and Literary Studies and Institute for Musicology HUN-REN Research Center for the Humanities on the 200th anniversary of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
